The animation was created with a frame-by-frame style in Photoshop and imported into Unity with stylesheets. The stylesheets were then input into Unity’s animation editor.

Character Design

The character design was created with an initial paper sketch and then modified in Photoshop. The Parents (above) were inspired by previous teachers I’ve had. It was fun developing the people I know in real life in pixel form.

hollow is a 2D Roguelike where your imaginary friend helps you traverse your dreams and conquer your fears. You are Kid. During the day, things seem dull. You talk to your parents and wander around your home and it all seems so mundane. During the night, everything is in technicolor. You explore a sprawling, procedurally generated dreamscape full of color, adventure, and excitement. Your imaginary friend, Ghost, is both your guide and your primary weapon in your dreams. Through your dreams, you and Ghost must battle your inner fears or risk being consumed by them. This alpha was created by Team Hollow to fulfill the capstone requirement for the MA Game Design Program at American University, Washington D.C.

Unity, C#, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects.

Design Elements

Having grown up in the 90’s, I created an environment full of personal nostalgia for Kid that mirrored my childhood surroundings. I consider the 90’s to be the golden age for animated television shows and incorporating characters into toys and games for this protagonist was very comforting.
